International medical insurance to suit you

We offer five levels of cover to help you find the right international private medical insurance, based on your needs and budget. For more detail on what’s covered, read on.

With any of our cover levels, you’ll have access to private healthcare anywhere in the world, including access to our AXA select network of hospitals where we can pay your treatment costs directly for you. 

 This is different to a travel insurance policy, which usually offers short term cover for medical emergencies, and non-medical benefits like cover for lost luggage or cancellations. If you need both, we can do that too – you can find out more on our travel health insurance page.

What's not included

As with most health insurance, there are some exclusions and limits, no matter which cover level you choose:

  • Our plans are designed to cover the treatment of medical conditions that start after you join. That means the plans don’t cover pre‐existing conditions.
  • The plans only cover for charges for treatment that the hospital or medical practitioner would reasonably and customarily charge in the country where you have the treatment. 

Our international health insurance plans also don't cover:

  • Treatment outside your area of cover or against medical advice.
  • Treatment for injuries as a result of sports that you receive money for taking part in.
  • Costs for arranging treatment, such as phone calls and travel.
  • Treatment designed to prevent illness rather than treat it.
Tailor your cover

There are multiple ways to personalise your cover to suit your needs. You can select these upgrades when getting a quote, depending on the level of cover you choose.

Add an optional upgrade

If your plan doesn’t include these benefits already, you can choose to upgrade your cover with:

  • Out-patient treatment - which includes consultations with a doctor, diagnostic tests, physiotherapy, vaccinations, drugs and more. 
  • Dental care – more cover for routine dental care.
  • Cover for when you’re travelling – for things like lost luggage and cancellations. So you can take care of both your travel and health insurance with one policy.

Add an excess

You can choose to lower your premiums by adding an excess. This means that when you claim, you’ll agree to pay up to a set amount, and in return you’ll pay lower premiums.

Choose how often you’d like to pay

You can pay your premiums monthly, quarterly or annually. Paying annually will save you 5% on the total cost.

Choose whether to include the USA

Include or exclude the USA – it’s that simple. We offer this option because treatment in the USA is often more expensive than elsewhere in the world.

If you choose to exclude the USA, you’ll still be covered for emergency treatment there, with all cover levels except Foundation.

Short term cover

Need cover for 3 to 11 months?

If you’re living or working internationally for less than a year, take a look at our short term health insurance plan. It gives you all the benefits of our Standard cover level, but for a shorter time. So whether you’re only away for a few months, still weighing up your options or you want cover while you apply for your local state healthcare system, our short term plan could be ideal.

Online doctor consultation and prescription service

Need to talk to a doctor but don’t speak the local language? Or just struggling to find time for that appointment in your busy schedule? When you live or work abroad, accessing healthcare isn’t always easy.  But with our new online doctor service, now available as part of our international health plans, you can speak to an experienced, internationally qualified doctor - at a time and place that suits you.
