What is international pregnancy and maternity cover ?

What you get with our pregnancy

When you take out an international insurance policy with us, you get access to a wide range of benefits, including our Virtual Doctor and Second Medical Opinion services, and medical evacuation and repatriation cover. But with our maternity benefit you can also get specific support with other aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, such as: 

  • Remote midwife support: our team of UK-based midwives are available by phone, seven days a week , in case you need advice and reassurance, or simply want access to an English-speaking professional.*
  • Antenatal and postnatal support: we can cover antenatal and postnatal consultations to give you physical and emotional support either side of your new arrival.
  • Baby inclusive policies: your new arrival can be included on your international maternity insurance policy from the moment they’re born (subject to conditions).
  • Newborn checks: you want to know your newborn is fit and healthy before they leave hospital, so we make sure they receive all the right medical checks while they’re there.  
  • Medical condition cover: we cover medical conditions that arise during a pregnancy, such as ectopic pregnancies, retained placenta, eclampsia, postpartum haemorrhages, and miscarriages.
  • Optional routine childbirth cover: up to £12,000 of cover for routine pregnancy and childbirth care can be added with our Prestige and Prestige Plus level policies.

*Available 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, until 4 pm on Saturday and until 12pm on Sunday, UK time.

    Pregnancy and maternity benefit FAQs

    There’s an 18-month waiting period (moratorium) for the pregnancy benefit, which means you’ll need to be covered by us continuously for this length of time before you can claim for it. 

    No. Our pregnancy and childbirth cover is available as standard on our Prestige and Prestige Plus options. It’s not available as an added extra. Routine pregnancy and childbirth cover is available on up to a maximum of £10,000 / €12,750 / $16,000 with Prestige, and up to £12,000 / €15,300 / $19,200 with Prestige Plus. There’s an 18-month waiting period (moratorium) for this benefit, which means you’ll need to be covered by us continuously for this length of time before you can claim for it.

    Every mother and every pregnancy are different, so there are lots of specifics to take into account when searching for international pregnancy and maternity cover. As well as the length of time you’ll be working in the country, and how good the medical facilities are there, you should also consider the types of support and services you’re most likely to need.

    Yes, our pregnancy and maternity benefit covers the medical conditions that can occur during pregnancy and childbirth. This includes, and is not necessarily limited to, ectopic pregnancies, retained placenta, eclampsia, postpartum haemorrhages, and miscarriages.
